The Loop Crew Partners

The Loop Bus began with the Sturrock Family wanting to spend a year together travelling New Zealand. With Cam being an Associate of The Natural Step and sustainability manager and Nikki a rabid environmentalist, when it came down to the knitty gritty of building and fueling the bus it took a year of research to make sure we were doing no harm before we set off. Our research unearthed these technically savvy, future thinking and ethical businesses that support a sustainable outcome for people, profit and the planet.

New Zealand Motor Caravan Association

For the first two years of our adventure we were privileged to be the sustainability champions for the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) giving us direct access to their 65,000 members by following our journey in their bi-monthly magazine. We continue to meet members who have been extremely keen on engaging in the sustainability conversation. They have a real interest in technology, many are tree planters and gardeners, pick up litter found around them on their travels and live by the adage of “Leave it better than you find it”.

GreenFuels NZ

Martin Johnson from Green Fuels NZ is supplying us with the biodiesel for the journey and shipping it to pre-arranged locations as we travel. Green Fuels manufactures its Biogold™ branded biodiesel in Christchurch and it is made from 100% recycled vegetable oil. It is sold throughout New Zealand. Biogold™ is a renewable, environmentally-friendly fuel that can directly replace conventional petroleum diesel and will result in substantial reductions in our tailpipe emissions and our carbon footprint. We will be aiming to run the bus on at least a 60% blend of Biogold, to use 100% Biogold to run our cooking, water and space heating and to give fellow NZMCA members the opportunity to trial Biogold™ in their own vehicles. The Biogold gifted by Green Fuels to the NZMCA’s 2016 Easter Rally saw members emissions reduced by more than 1 tonne.

Reid Technology

The dream power plan would see the Loop bus be a mobile charging station for our electric car and electronics on board. Reid Technology are industry innovation award winners designing solar systems that work beyond requirement. There’s also something about working with skilled technologically advanced people willing to walk us “babes in the wood” through it all without firing you as a customer! The other thing is there is something about dealing with people working in businesses that do good, they seem more alive, willing, interested, helpful and determined to have you succeed. Dream realised! Electric car can drive on sunshine. Thanks Mr Reid!

Century Yuasa

The dream of driving our electric car on sunshine and being completely off grid in the Loop Bus would not have been possible without Nigel Chang’s advise and guidance around batteries. Two AGM deep cycle Century Yuasa batteries weighing in at 74 kgs each with a over sized cable running to an inverter has realised our sunshine dream. Simple and smart. The batteries have the added advantage of being 98% recyclable and Century Yuasa will take them back at end of life. Century Yuasa are also committed to environmental initiatives to offset their vehicle emissions through tree planting. Thanks for the freedom Mr Chang!

Nature’s Head NZ

Alan Morton from Nature’s Head NZ has provided us a very simple yet technologically advanced Nature’s Head toilet. This is one of our favourite things on the bus as it produces what we are calling a soil conditioner instead of sewage. As gardeners and tree planters we have a keen interest in soil health and to be given essentially a soil manufacturing machine that does not use or pollute fresh water is something we are truly excited to use and give people the opportunity to see and understand. It turns out the toilet is one of the things visitors have spent the most time discussing. People are in agreement that turning our fresh water into sewage is not sustainable and are actively looking for solutions.

Polymer Fabricated Products 2009

Gerard Richardson of Polymer Fabricated Products 2009 Ltd was able to maximise our fresh and waste water tanks by custom building them out of plastic off-cuts from his polyethylene extrusion welding business. It has amazed us to find people in the most unlikely of places sharing the same concerns around sustainability. Gerard has a vast knowledge of plastic life-cycle and  fabrication. Plastic  can do so much good when managed appropriately and kept within the techno-sphere. Gerard takes plastic disposal seriously as he enjoys fishing and has concerns around it entering the biosphere. Gerard gifted us  a custom worm farm of his own design giving us the ability to turn our vege scraps and Natures Head solids into a nutritious soil conditioner.

Natural Beds

We thought it would be easy to find natural bedding and mattresses you know made from nature completely from the biosphere with no plastic content requiring toxic fire retardant spray. If polyester is added as a fluffer it mixes  biosphere with techno-sphere creating a monster hybrid which has to go to land fill at the end of life. There is only one guy left in NZ making Natural Beds…Ralph Behrens in West Auckland of all places. His mattresses and bedding are biosphere products completely made from and by nature using latex, wool, organic cotton and bamboo which can be totally reclaimed by nature at end of life. Thanks Ralph The Loop Crew are sleeping warm and cosy.

Motorhome Repairs Auckland

Sam West is the heart and soul of Motorhome Repairs Auckland ltd. When we were ready to push go on the sustainable makeover of our recently purchased 1978 0305 Mercedes we were lucky enough to find Sam. Complete luck as it happens as Sam had recently purchased Andy’s Motorhomes with the idea of bringing the old business into the 21st century with a sustainability makeover of its own. Sam West is 21 years old but don’t let that throw you, he has surrounded himself with the wisdom of the industries elders and employs the energy of the youth. The Loop Crew were set to work along with the rest of Sam’s team pulling the whole Job off within hours of the Covi Show Launch. Sam is an NZMCA member and loves motorhoming and motorhomers he’s all about getting them back on the road.

Seamless Coatings

Terry and Jaron Archer from Seamless Coatings Ltd have sealed The Loop bus roof with an environmentally sensitive flexible membrane called FFR-K1 to protect and waterproof it. This will add to the longevity of The Loop by dealing with leaks and UV rays. The membrane also has a degree of insulating quality that reduces energy consumption. It is a low volatile organic compound (VOC) product that repairs damage and saves the existing structure there by reducing waste. This FFR-K1 is being used extensively on flat roofs where leaky buildings have resulted where it saves time, costs and possible re-pitching the roof to comply with new council regulations. It also has a 20 year product and labour warranty with little-to-no maintenance. It’s nice to lie in the bus at night when it’s wet and stormy outside to know we are safe and secure from the elements.

Inzide Commercial

Robb Donze from INZIDE Commercial has provided our carpet and vinyl flooring. We are particularly excited to be able to share the ingenious and inspirational story of the carpet made by Interface in part using old fishing nets from the Philippines. This initiative sees fishing village communities offered another revenue stream via payment to clear ocean reefs of dangerous old nets which are turned into recyclable nylon carpet tiles. We have the great privilege of having the warmth and style of this industry leading carpet in the Loop. Robb has also supplied us with a slip resistant vinyl flooring which manufactured by Forbo Flooring Systems under strict environment control, is 100% recyclable, low VOC and produced with 100% green electricity.

Enjo

The Sturrock Family have been using Enjo products for almost 10 years. Enjo use micro fibre technology to clean surfaces instead of chemicals. Basically you use water and the mit to rub clean and a cloth to dry off the water and its done. Chemicals and the production and disposal of chemicals are doing an unsustainable amount of damage to the earths clean water supply. The Loop Bus has 2 tanks 1 for water and 1 for waste water (black tank), we wanted our waste water to be nontoxic to the environment and using Enjo fibres to clean gives us this assurance. The black tank water is made up of wees, water a small amount of palm oil free shampoo and conditioner and washed off food from the dishes. We are producing something nutritious for the land, we use dump stations but from time to time private land owners appreciate the nutrients on their fruit trees and paddocks.

Volt Vehicles

Cam’s work car was a 100% Electric Nissan Leaf and we wanted another one. We shopped around alot from car yard to to importers. When we found David Lees from Volt Vehicles we knew we had a fit. David was as technically savvy and connected as our other partners and we knew when we bought a car from him, he and his knowledge and connections would only be a phone call away. We discussed in depth towing verses driving and calculated for the price of a tow bar and dolly trailer we could drive to the moon. Our Leaf was a Japanese import with 9000 ks on the clock and cost us 23k.

Charge.net.nz

Chargenet and its founders Dee and Steve West are a God send to us and people wanting to use electric vehicles in NZ. The rapid chargers they are currently installing across New Zealand give us the ability to charge faster and travel further. We can charge our 100% electric fully in 25 minutes for $10 which gives us the ability to travel an average of 120 ks. The National government have been very slow to support electric vehicles and the Loop Crew are so grateful to this private husband and wife team who decided to open New Zealand roads up to kiwis choosing electric! This kind of infrastructure is not cheap and will take around 17 years to turn a profit, this is the kind of initiative the government should be supporting we need people with long term vision like Dee and Steve in government…sorry guys but it needed to be said.

Etiko

Nick Savaidis is the founder and driving force behind Fairtrade Award winner Etiko. When the Loop Crew started down the path of sustainability we questioned all the businesses we were voting for by purchasing from them. Shoes…no worries just off to the shoe shop to get the most sustainable ones, you know that do no harm to people and planet…NONE!! Not one pair of shoes in NZ  do not either use child labour or border line slave labour or mix technosphere and biosphere creating toxic land fill. Hang on this is clean green NZ I’m talking about. Thankfully Nick had already been down this path in Australia and created Etiko which means the Loop Crew can proudly and comfortably protect our feet with shoes that employ people at a decent wage and they are also made completely from the biosphere so at the end of life Mother nature can break them down, yes it takes a long time but it does not produce toxic waste!

Liminal Apparel

Sustainability had us analysing everything even our clothes. As research we watched True Cost…UGH! We couldn’t show people our lovely bus wearing clothes made by slaves…there we said it. The 2016 Australian Fashion Report looking at supply chains of 300+ fashion brands gave New Zealand’s Liminal Apparel an A-. Through Liminal we accessed Tees from Freeset. This company rescues stolen women and children from the sex slave industry in Kalcutta and trains them as seamstresses, pays them a decent wage and gives them health care benefits. Freeset has an award winning doco and Kiwis should watch to see what’s possible for us to achieve on a world stage. Unfortunately we have yet to find pants…we’ll keep you posted, we’re wearing jeans that we’ve bought second hand, have been made by people paid nothing living in bad conditions polluting the planet in the process…what are you wearing?

Fridgetech Marine & Outdoors

We wanted a top loading fridge and freezer to stop the cold air from falling on our feet every time we open the door which wastes energy and spoils food through fluctuating temperatures. Greg and Sharon Knight from Fridgetech Marine & Outdoors supplied us with 12v  Isotherm units. Greg  worked with our unusual installation request to relocate the warm fridge / freezer compressors to utilise their heat energy under the bathroom floor. With having no LPG gas supply on-board Fridgetech have also provided us with additional smart controllers to further decrease our energy consumption. Greg stands behind his products and customers by supplying service, technical education, reliable products and access to replacement parts which results in less waste and longevity. He even let us park up overnight outside his workshop while he and his team worked on a last minute adjustment to the installation before we left Auckland.

The Natural Step NZ

Campbell is an Associate with The Natural Step which is a global network of non-profit organizations whose approach to sustainable development helps people and organisations develop and implement strategic steps towards true sustainability and ongoing success. It is being used around the world in exciting, innovative and ground-breaking ways by some of the worlds leading businesses. The Natural Steps vision is to help foster a sustainable society — one in which individuals, communities, businesses and institutions thrive within nature’s limits. We think that’s a pretty good goal for us all to start working towards.

Auckland Zoo

We would like the Loop Bus to be palm oil free. Palm oil is hidden in over 50% of packaged items in our supermarkets and is produced by unsustainable business practices which are wiping out rainforest, orangutans, tigers, rhinos etc in Indonesia. We use the Auckland Zoo’s palm oil free shopping guide to avoid products (readily available and unlabelled here in NZ) and have been handing out the guide as we travel. You can use your purchase power to keep the rainforests, search: Auckland Zoo Palm Oil Freeand Shopping Guide. The kids at Levin School were very keen to know exactly how to detect palm oil so they could save orangutan the next time they went grocery shopping with their parents!!

Love Your Coast

The Love Your Coast project was started by a collaboration of New Zealand non-profit organisations, including Sustainable Coastlines, Keep New Zealand Beautiful, Sir Peter Blake Trust, Social Innovation and Watercare Harbour Clean-up Trust. The Love Your Coast website has a range of videos and downloadable documents that will help you plan, promote and run your own event. You can view or download their event planning resources and/or create your own event. These guys have done so many clean ups they know how to make it happen easily and effectively so they are sharing how as well as offering support. The Loop Crew pick up rubbish every place we stop and are keen to support anyone doing the same.

The Loop Crew

The Loop Crew is made up of not only the Sturrock Family, Campbell, Nikki, Bracken, Breeze and Reef and our partners but of the huge number of people getting on board as The Loop bus travels around the country. We have had the great privilege of being visited by over 1600 people so far. Everywhere we stop whether it be outside the supermarket or at a beach people are turning up wanting to know about sustainability and have a story to tell. We are so proud to be a part of what some people are saying is the Great Turning and technology for the greater good is at the forefront of this new vision.
